Winter Safety Tips

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0 | December 28th, 2022

Oh, the glorious Texas winter season is here! What does that mean exactly? It might mean seasonal decorations, colder weather, lots of food, and nice cozy nights by the fire.. But with all these festivities come hazards that we sometimes don’t think about. Never fear! Home Health Professionals is here to help you to keep your friends and family safe. Below we cover major holiday safety precautions to take this season:

Prepping Your Car for the Winter

  • Test Your Car Battery before going on your trip
  • Check Your Tire Pressure as this changes with the weather
  • Keep your gas tank at least ½ full to avoid freezing or being stuck in the cold on empty

Traveling for the Holidays

  • Get a good night’s sleep before departing on your trip to avoid drowsy driving
  • Leave early to avoid heavy traffic
  • Designate a driver if you are planning on driving after a holiday party
  • Put your cell phone away! Don’t drive distracted
  • Practice defensive driving
  • Click it or tick it!

Holiday Decorating Precautions

  • Remember to use the correct lights throughout the inside and outside of your house. Use indoor lights inside and outdoor lights outside.
  • When hanging lights be sure to use the right ladder for the job.
  • Be sure to plug in lights according to package directions. Do not overload one socket with too many plugs.
  • Never nail or tack a wire when hanging lights, and keep all wires away from puddles of water.
  • Turn all lights off when you are sleeping or away from the house.
  • Decorate with your family in mind! Remember those pets, grandchildren, and friends who might want to reach low-hanging ornaments. Keep breakable ornaments up high!
  • Keep your tree at least 3 feet away from fireplaces and other heat sources.
  • If using a live Christmas tree be sure to cut 2 inches off of the trunk to expose fresh wood for better water absorption and remove the tree when it is dry.
  • Be aware of potentially poisonous plants like mistletoe, holly berries, Jerusalem Cherry, and amaryllis.

Cooking for the Holiday

  • Wash your hands frequently to avoid cross contamination.
  • Keep raw meat away from other food items.
  • Use a food thermometer to ensure that meat and poultry are cooked to a safe temperature.
  • Be sure to refrigerate hot or cold leftover food within 2 hours of being served.

Watch out for Fire Starters

  • Place candles where they cannot be knocked down by people or pets.
  • Keep matches and lighters in a safe place away from under age individuals.
  • Don’t burn trees, wreaths, or wrapping paper in your fireplace.
  • Be sure to use a screen on your fireplace at all times when in use.
  • Check and clean your chimney at least once a year.
  • Never leave candles or fireplaces burning unattended when you are asleep.
