Stress Awareness Month

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0 | April 10th, 2023

While everyone can agree stress is a part of life, there is no one-size-fits-all method for each individual’s stress level or stress reliever. This month we are delving into stress. Whether the stress you are experiencing is due to a recent diagnosis, loss of job, personal hardship, or any other situation, it’s important to learn to cope and find healthy ways to deal with your stress. Stress is different for each individual, but it is broadly characterized as physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension. Stress can lead to:

  • A sense of disbelief, shock, numbness
  • Feeling sad, frustrated, and helpless
  • Difficulty concentrating and making decisions
  • Headaches, back pain, and stomach problems
  • Starting or increasing the use of alcohol, smoking, or drugs

Long-term stress can have a tremendous impact on your health as well. From stomach disorders to depression to stroke and heart disease, if left unchecked, stress can wreak havoc on your body. However, you don’t have to live with this type of stress. Learning to cope and live a healthy life while dealing with stressful situations can lead you down a path to a more balanced life.

Learning to De-Stress Yourself

Feeling your body healthy food, exercising regularly, getting 6-8 hours of sleep, and giving yourself a break is a great way to create a less stressful lifestyle. Remember, it’s ok to take a break and step away from a stressful moment or situation. Also, know that you have the ability to speak to someone about how you’re feeling. Whether it’s a friend, family member, spouse, spiritual leader, counselor, or therapist, share your stressors. Always remember: Your voice matters! Keep in mind that using substances like drugs and alcohol don’t just mask the problem, they exacerbate them as well. Reach out to someone and empower yourself to deal with your stress.
