Senior Independence Month is not just about doing things on your own. Senior independence is more than that. This month is to remind you that no matter your age, you should strive to live your life to its fullest potential. There are so many organizations, events, and programs that you can get involved with! If you don’t know what the true meaning of senior independence is or you just need some ideas of what you can do to stay busy, keep reading. Let HHP be your source of information!

Let’s get a little more clarity on what precisely Senior Independence Month is all about. Senior independence is about helping senior citizens find ways to live a happier and more fulfilling life. No matter what season of life you are in, you deserve satisfaction in whatever you do.

Build Your Community

Getting plugged into your community is vital to your emotional, physical, and psychological health. Remember everything is better with a purpose and a friend!

Don’t Fear Technology

Since COVID, the landscape of technology use has drastically changed. One of the biggest changes has been the addition of virtual classes, meetings, and so much more. Gone are the days of dialing a phone number and getting an audio-only response. With the touch of a button, you can now see someone, or even a group of people, right on your mobile device. Don’t let technology intimidate you! From online Zumba classes to Zoom classes, games to library books, you can experience so much in the digital world. Ask a friend or a loved one to teach you how to use the technology around you to get connected!

Get Moving

Get up and get active! Exercise has been shown to prevent disease, increase mobility and balance, reduce falls, and improve cognitive function. Incorporate exercises like Tai Chi, yoga, and Zumba. Call your local mall, some participating locations open early to allow individuals to walk indoors, join your local Silver Sneakers group, or even your local gym! There’s a plethora of ways you can get active, and it’s imperative that you do so!

Help Yourself By Helping Others

When you volunteer you can maintain or even create social capital. You build trust, connections, and purpose when helping others. Get plugged into a cause you believe in!

Organize Your Life

A cluttered and disorganized living space can be overwhelming, cause stress, and can even be dangerous. Keeping your space clean and organized can contribute to your overall health and well-being. Organizing your home may feel like a formidable task, but slow down and take it one step at a time. Choose one room or area to organize first. Make sure that your floors are empty with no wires, slippery rugs, or furniture in the way that could potentially lead to a fall. Then work your way up, making sure that every item has a place. Install handrails and ensure doorknobs are easy to turn. Make your life just a little bit easier with some organization.

This new season in your life is an adventure just like the chapters of life you’ve already experienced. Embrace the challenges and live your life to the fullest. Your independence is a matter of your will to stay active! At Home Health Professionals we strive to get you back to the independence you once had.
