Caregivers

Caregiving. So many of us have been thrust into this role without any knowledge of what it entails and, even more shockingly, how it can affect you and members of your family. According to the Administration for Community Living, nearly half of all caregivers are over the age of 50 and many are already vulnerable to a decline in their own health. This month we take time to honor all the time and effort caregivers provide for friends, family, and loved ones.

Caregiving is a tough job.  It is demanding of schedules and energy and can often take a massive toll on the caregiver. Many caregivers report skipping personal doctor appointments because of the demands of their caregiving duties. While it’s easy to lose sight of your own needs when focused on the needs of others, it’s important to remember to care for yourself first. Understanding your stressors and finding healthy outlets are vital for successful caregiving. Be sure to get adequate sleep, exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet to maintain your health.

In today’s society, there are so many outlets and sources for assistance to help you on the caregiving journey. Get connected within your community and like-minded people to make the most out of your caregiving experience. Remember that you are not alone and it is ok to ask for help or advice. If you have other trustworthy family members or resources that can provide a break or assistance, ask for it! Your support network is vital to helping you provide the best care possible to your loved ones.

Engage in as much effective communication as possible. Learn what your loved one’s specific medical needs are so that when it comes time to communicate with their doctor, you know the best questions to ask! Organize your loved one’s legal and medical documents so that in the event you aren’t present for an emergency, they are easy to access and follow. Remember, being a caregiver is not for the faint of heart. Give yourself credit, you’re doing one of the toughest jobs there is!

We honor and salute you, caregiver, on this National Family Caregivers Month.
