Influenza Awareness Month

Flu season is here and it’s in full swing! This month we are taking some time to remind you about facts and symptoms of the flu, and how you can protect yourself against the virus.

Influenza is a viral infection that can cause mild to severe symptoms. This virus can be life-threatening, and can even result in death. Flu viruses spread mainly by coughing or sneezing, but did you know you could also contract the virus other ways? Touching any type of contaminated surface and inadvertently touching your mouth, eyes, or nose can lead to the virus infecting you. This is why washing your hands properly is paramount to your health.

Remember, the flu is not the common cold. It can come on very suddenly with symptoms including:

  • Fever
  • Aches and Pains (Muscles, Headaches, and Body Aches)
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Cough, Runny or Stuffy Nose, Sore Throat
  • Vomiting and/or Diarrhea

The best defense against the flu is getting your annual flu vaccination. This is especially important for children, immunocompromised individuals, and patients over the age of 65. Vaccinations will help you fight the virus and help decrease the severity, duration, and potential complications that can come from the illness. Keep in mind that vaccinations are not a “one size fits all” solution and do not guarantee immunity to the flu. Everyone’s reaction to the flu vaccination is different and results will vary. However, it is important for you to take the necessary precautions to help fight influenza in any way you can.

Flu shots are now given at your local pharmacy, but you could always ask your primary care physician if you can get the flu shot today.
