Hurricane Season: Useful Tools

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0 | August 18th, 2022

Most Texans are well seasoned when it comes to hurricane preparedness. We know items like flashlights, batteries, water, and first aid kits are imperative to have in your hurricane kit. See the list below for a few other items to add to your kits that come in handy in case of an emergency:

HEADLAMPS

We know flashlights and batteries are necessary but having a headlamp can make a world of difference in an emergency situation. A headlamp can free up your hands, allowing you to move freely during a power outage.

BATTERY-POWERED PHONE CHARGER

Regardless if you are in the middle of hurricane season, in the middle of a freak winter storm, or just out and about, a battery-powered phone charger is ESSENTIAL. Extreme heat or cold can drain your phone’s battery in a short amount of time. Having a battery-powered charger can make such a difference, especially during a power outage. These chargers are available at any major retail stores and come in a variety of price ranges. Make sure to keep it charged and ready to go!

HEAVY-DUTY GARBAGE BAGS

If you don’t have them, it’s time to run to your local Home Depot or Lowe’s. These particular trash bags are heavy-duty “contractor clean-up bags.” Although having trash bags seems like a straightforward need, the uses of these trash bags are endless! Need storage? A poncho? Want to make sure blankets, pillows, and clothes don’t get wet? Take a look at those multi-purpose trash bags. The thick plastic can survive sharp branches and even glass from ripping the bag. You won’t regret having these trash bags on hand!

KEEP COVID-19 IN MIND

Remember, since the Coronavirus is still around you should be prepared with your own PPE. If you need to evacuate to a shelter, keep in mind you may be required to wear a mask or other PPE. No worries if you don’t have any at the time, the Red Cross can usually help in this case.

Texans are always resourceful when it comes to hurricane season. Don’t forget that those old hurricane preparedness lists have been updated! Take a look and see what items you may need that you didn’t think of before.
