Healthy Aging Month

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0 | September 13th, 2022

No matter your age, it’s never too late to reinvent yourself! September is Healthy Aging month, which is designated to focus on the positive aspects of growing older. As time passes, sometimes we lose our passion to try new things or challenge ourselves. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are so many things you can do to feel better, look better, and give yourself a boost of confidence you may not have experienced in a while.

September is also a wonderful month to turn a new page in your book and try something new!  Sometimes as maturing individuals, the thought “been there, done that” may run through your mind frequently. But what about those times that you’ve been there, but haven’t done that? Have you ever faced an obstacle you felt you couldn’t quite overcome? Or have you ever wondered what it would be like to start something new? Take this article as your sign to take action! HealthyAging.com has some spectacular ideas to get you rolling into a new hobby, passion, or even a new career. Check them out here!

Do NOT Act Your Age!

Do you remember the best decade you ever had? Was it your 30s? Or maybe it was in your 40s? Regardless of age, stretch back to those memories and adopt that mindset. Age is more than just looks, it’s also about attitude!

  • Be Positive in Your Conversations.
    • Switch that negative talk to something positive! The words we say and the actions we take have an impact on our overall health. Take healthy steps to downplay the negativity. One way you can do this is by limiting your news intake. Sometimes the news can be downright depressing!
  • Don’t Let Technology Beat You!
    • Aren’t you just a little curious about how to use technology? How do our grandchildren pick it up so easily? Don’t let technology beat you, take a computer class or have your grandchild teach you how to play games with them. It’s a perfect time to bond and learn something new.
  • Walk Like a Vibrant Healthy Person.
    • Take a moment to really pay attention to your gait, or your stride. Maybe take a quick look in the mirror while you’re walking and check your stride. A shuffling walk could be a fear of falling but failing to address your overall gait could contribute to that fall!
  • Stand Up Straight!
    • Remember your parent telling you that? It was for a reason! Be sure to elongate that spine, pull your shoulders back, and keep that chin up. Practice this every day until your body can do it from pure muscle memory. Your body will thank you for it.
  • How’s Your Smile?
    • You don’t need a scientist to tell you that a smile can change the way you feel and the way others perceive you. Make it a habit to smile more often! Don’t forget to visit your dentist on a regular basis. Dental hygiene is just as important as your overall health.
  • Lonely?
    • Sometimes life can get to you! Take a moment and think about some things you like to do. This could be reading, taking care of pets, tinkering, or any number of things. There is ALWAYS an opportunity to volunteer at your local library, animal shelter, or even a club or class you can take to learn a new skill. This could be a wonderful way to make new friends too!
  • Start Walking
    • Get up and get active! This is so important in making sure your overall mood, health, and balance can continually be worked on and improved. You could walk to a local store or visit close neighbors, or even walk a dog. Get some fresh air and enjoy those beautiful days.
  • Get a Physical
    • Don’t forget those annual physicals. Regardless of any other physicians you may be seeing, always be sure you’re making a visit to your primary care provider to keep up with your overall health.
  • Find your Inner Artist
    • Have you ever enjoyed music? Take a chance and try learning a new instrument! Always wanted to paint or draw? Use some of that quiet time to tap into a new hobby. Ever wanted to try woodwork? Now is the time! The opportunities are endless, just remember that no one is a pro on the first try. Dedicate time and patience to what you want and eventually, you’ll get better!

No matter your age in life there is always an opportunity to learn and even teach others! Take a moment and reflect on the positive moments, the victories, that you have achieved in your life, and remember, it’s not over! You have the talent and opportunities to make a difference in your life and maybe in the life of someone around you.
